Song For My Forefathers
Beneath a big black cloud in a dreamless sleep
There is nothing but earth receding
Falling from my feet and I too will fall
My body will fail, and I will fall, and I hear you call out
--- “Hey, don’t you go, before I can get to you…”
And then the Coroner sighs a great big sigh.
She’s sighed it many, many, many, many times
And it falls out of her mouth
Expressed instinctively as a big black cloud
You can call it Death if you want to speak it out loud
Here I sing in the open West ---
I’m just trying to pay my spiritual debts
Strike up the funeral band.
Wreaths and coloured garlands, warm clasped hands
Forefathers, friends and family ---
I’m just trying to pay those spiritual debts
“Everything turns back to sand”.
Wreaths and coloured garlands, warm clasped hands
The rigors of Time, so indifferent.
Consistent. Relentless, pure and simple
In the back of my mind it features,
Always in the middle distance.
Look back at the love in life I built up as resistance
Do ones who went before me wait for me to come
And the ones I knew in life come to greet me when I’m done?
Oh yeah, if you see the Glory before I do
Will you meet me at the station when my train comes through?
When my train, oh, when my train comes through
When my train, oh, when my train comes through

Sleep

Sleep
My haircrime --- a scarecrow. Surely you must feel Winter now? Thick with condensation, the windows, when we open the curtains each morning --- I guess that’s a testament to how we are living and how much we are earning.
My red eyes will get no rest
But I won’t look to sleep for my answers
I’ll let them come slowly from somewhere deep in the night.
Look to me as a friend --- I won’t let you down
I’m beginning to understand what the Puritans taught about idle hands and the Devils’ welcoming arms --- how he fosters his children --- the waifs and the strays --- with his big ideas to lead them away from their homes.
My red eyes will get no rest
But I won’t look to sleep for my answers
I’ll let them come slowly from somewhere deep in the night.
Look to me as a friend --- I won’t let you down
Yes, I’d agree,
That sleeping is giving in
But the mind plays tricks
And lets all kinds of things in
My red eyes will get no rest
But I won’t look to sleep for my answers
I’ll let them come slowly by going out of my mind
I’m looking to you as a friend – oh, don’t let me down,
I’m looking to you as a friend – don’t let me down.
