about

“Where to start? 25 Songs! How dare they, these Silverlodes? Even the most battle hardened ‘Loder will fear that the band could not match such a grand ambition! It even has a subtitle. I mean. What must they have been thinking?

Fear not, noble listener, A Lion Walks Among Us (aka Kali THE DESTROYER) is a folk tinged, electric odyssey, the culmination of fifteen plus years writing, recording, gigging and slogging equipment in and out of shanty-venues across the country. From the sea infused tones of this grand statement you wouldn’t be surprised if they had done it all via a rowing boat.

However be warned. This is a familiar world channeled through prime lyricist Rob Rowley’s very particular filter, a Tolkienian take brimming with intrigue and up to its guts in mythology. The same muddy pathways and isolated spots are here, waiting for the drama to unfold whether it’s through the tossing of a coin on Ullswater’s alluring shores or through or the protagonist of Missing Persons, desperate to disappear as his mother trawls the “places where a young man may be”.

More familiar are the snares of everyday life. Another Work Song says it best with “Oh, the life that I lead is so close to breaking me, but I remember the other extreme, always famine or feast”. The nine to five (plus six) becoming ever ingrained the further we all venture into the 21st Century. Friends details the difficulty of mid-30s meet ups and “stay-in Stacey’s” all over this tired land will empathise with the sentiment.

Matters of the heart weigh heavy across this release. My Green Eyes lusty lament of “I wanted to hold you near. Best stay away, best steer clear” paints the narrator in self-doubt whilst the emboldened Push You Harder talks about dragging you up the stairs when “you should already fucking care”.

It’s no surprise that this creative purple patch has been mirrored by the evolution of the bands itself with the axis shifting to a core of Rowley, Crosby, Searle-Jones and Sutcliffe around 2014. What is surprising is how much of this album feels like a culmination of everything that this band has ever done; it’s all here, the slow building strings, the ghostly backing vocals, the skiffle, the prog and the rock of the early days all wrapped up in short stories that are as modern as much as they a rooted in the finest traditions of British Pop.”

Track Name: A Lion Walks Among Us
We’ll be running wild boys, until the dying of the day while a lion walks among us, oh!
With the dying of the embers at the dawning of the day, we will breathe a little life back to the fires of yesterday….
Track Name: Another Work Song
Another fourteen hours of my life in the cold, wind and rain
On my feet all day until both my feet ache, my whole body aches
An hour in the evening that I call my own before I crash out in bed with the alarm clock set and it quickly tells me that I've got to get
up and to do it all over again
And they're wearing me out
Christ, they're wearing us all out
and they're wearing me out
and it's wearing on you

Another fourteen hours of my life in the baking hot sun
My face is burnt, my hands are black and it's lost any notion of fun
Driving back to the flat, tired as hell with headlight coronas trying to tell me that I could die any one of these nights but I'll do it all over again
And they're wearing me out
Christ, they're wearing us all out
and they're wearing me out
and it's wearing on you

Oh, the life that I lead
is so close to breaking me
but I remember the other extreme ---
always famine or feast

And it's wearing me out
Christ, it's wearing us both out
and it's wearing me out
and it’s wearing on you
Track Name: Friends
Tried to party all night but I crashed out 'round twelve-thirty
Tried to party all night but I really wasn't thirsty
And I wasn't going to go, I tried to stay at home but they made me
Yeah, there's something going on but I'm a stay-in Stacey

And if I don't get back alive
Or if I don't make thirty-five

I’ve had a wonderful time, thanks for coming to see me
Had a wonderful time, but I read the signs, I'm leaving
And I wasn't going to go, ‘cos I’ve forgotten how to partáy
Tried to party all night but I threw up outside Carpe

And if I don't get back alive
Or if I don't make thirty-five

Keep holding on
Keep holding on
Keep holding ever-shifting shapes and bodies out in space, anon
Hey, that’s friends, holding on

And if I don't get back alive
Or if I don't make thirty-five

Keep holding on
Keep holding on
Keep holding ever-shifting shapes and bodies out in space, anon
Hey, that’s friends, holding on
Track Name: Ullswater
Toss that golden coin within your pocket into darkest, deepest Ullswater under no illusion that it's ever coming back in an amount equal to itself, or multiplied ten-thousand-fold, for when it finally surfaces it will no longer be gold. And you choose a lonely path when you choose to wander all alone under lofty canopies of sickly shaded sycamores, among the rocky outcrops of lichen-covered stone down into the cold valley that is waiting, gaping down below.
Those who choose to settle by the shores of that freshwater rarely know the beauty of the sunshine others know, yet the course of their own histories, lost unto the fray, has made them most familiar with the shifting wall of gray of that dark oppressive landscape --- looks more and more foreboding; its weight sat like an omen on the skyline --- a vivid warning. As clouds cluster up and blacken, see how they loom, see how they threaten a particular brand of violence to anything below.
So starts torrential downpour; batters hard upon the canvas amplifying each and every droplet, each and every sound until it forms a brutish drumming lacking rhythm, lacking structure, lacking any sense of timing, pounding hard upon the ground. And there’s the baying of the cattle, so very sad and distant --- I could lose myself to Sorrow and just stay that way forever. Makes me think of missing children lost to heavy weather --- dark and gusty midnight snowfall --- wandering lost upon the edge.
Track Name: I Haven't Got It All figured Out
I feel my flame burning down
but I’m really trying hard now
and I haven’t got it all figured out

Oh the time right --- the time is now
and I haven’t got it all figured out

I haven’t really got the timings worked out
and I haven’t got it all figured out
I haven’t got it all figured out
I haven’t got it all figured out
I haven’t got it all figured out
Track Name: Looking For You
I’ve done this trip many times before, looking for you. Looking for you
I’ve heard it said many times before, it’s nothing new. It’s nothing new

And it’s written all over my face
It’s written all over my face

Bare your steel, tell me how you really feel
How you really feel
I’ve read about love in the leaves of a book and I’ve snapped it shut --- it was never enough for you

And it’s written all over my face
It’s written all over my face
It’s written all over my face
It’s written all over my face
Track Name: A Land Across The Sea (October Into November)
Two lovers splintered up like timber --- watch the riving knife and the sawblade shield
When the rains came on the floodplain, failed to gather in the corn from the field
“Come away, come away, come away with me. We will make a new life, dear, in a land across the sea”

Then came November, colder and harder, whipped up a wind that caused quiet a fright.
Down by the harbour and out into hereafter; it was ill-advised to set by night
“Come away, come away, come away with me. We will make a new life, dear, in a land across the sea”

The wheelwright's daughter, when they called for her, wasn’t there to respond to her name
Her and her new man, the tall farmhand, drowned in the night in a lover’s flame
“Come away, come away, come away with me. We will make a new life, dear, in a land across the sea”

“We will make a new life, dear, in a land across the sea”
Track Name: Bird Released
When you close your eyes, tell me what you see, is it all you wished and hoped it would be? Come on and shine your light on me
I need to feel my own mortality

When the night grew cold and others shied away, you faced your demons with a confidence that stayed. You came and made my life worthwhile, all it took was one sweet smile

To sing like a bird released
Make me feel like I need to believe
In time we’ll find our perfect day
And fly all our troubles away

It’s in your eyes
I think but don’t know why
To feel the same ---
I have to change

Sing like a bird released now
Make me feel like I need to believe
In time we’ll find our perfect day
And fly all our troubles….
Fly all our troubles….
Fly all our troubles away
Fly all our troubles….
Fly all our troubles….
Fly all our troubles away
Track Name: Missing Persons
I heard that my mother was looking for me in the places where a young man may be when trouble has found him alone on the sea and washed him up where the tide’s lazy

She tried the hospital, the jailhouse --- an ad in the paper but I am running from the safety, not any given danger
The trick is to just disappear, completely

Everything, everything, so sick of the sound, got sick of just waiting around for something to happen --- let chaos take a hold of me now

I went to the cathedral and dropped to the floor. I was desperately seeking forgiveness, of sorts, for all my misdeeds and all my dark thoughts, but all I received was a sermon

Mother tried the army, the graveyard --- all of our neighbours but I am running from the safety, not any given danger
The trick is to just disappear, completely

Spiraling, spiraling in discordant sound, got tired of waiting around for praise and attention --- let chaos take a hold of me now

I heard that my mother was looking for me in the places where a young man may be when he’s swallowed a chestful and cannot breathe for the tide won’t care where he reaches
Track Name: Push You Harder
When they kick your uprights out like the woodworm that they are
Don’t take it laying down ‘cos I told you boys where I parked the getaway car

What will you be singing in five years?
Or will your voice rust up because of all those salty tears?

Don’t make it harder than it is
Don’t make me push you harder
Don’t make me drag you up the stairs
You should already fucking care

‘Cause when they tear our city down like a stampede passing through
Don’t want to say that no, we weren’t there on the front line, fighting for what is cool

What will you sing to me in five years?
I don’t want to see you ground down, tied down, cuffed to the office chair!

Don’t make it harder than it is
Don’t make me push you harder
Don’t make me drag you up the stairs
You should already fucking care

Where do you think we are headed, well I’m not quite sure myself
I’d like to think that it I still fun but you’re not convincing anyone

Well, what will you sing to me in five years?
You’re already ground down, tied down, wearing a big frown

Don’t make it harder than it is
Don’t make me push you harder
Don’t make me drag you up the stairs
You should already fucking care
Track Name: Bruising
Behold! My true enemy!
One careless desire and I find myself walking through fire

Oh, it seems she’ll be the death of me
She covers my eyes and she tells me shut up and drive

I took a walk in the rain with my own dark thoughts and considered the things for which we had fought with Worry, my constant companion --- oh, Worry, a serious flame
“Let it all go” you cry but I can’t, I can’t just let it lie, even though I really tried --- it’s Worry that keeps me straight
I’ve had all I can stand
Look at my ruined plans
I wanted to make my case

Oh, I’m headed to ruin
‘Cos that’s a lot of bad dreams
A nursery rhyme in the back of my mind and up my sleeve

Or is it the weather
And that’s why I can’t sleep
Always climbing the walls, forever chasing the sheep

I don’t believe in the echoing past or the lights that lure you from the path but I can’t deny there’s something black creeping closer, day by day
“Let it all go” you cry but I can’t, I can’t just let it lie, even though I might have tried --- it’s Worry that keeps me straight
I’ve had all I can stand
Fruit will bruise where it lands
I’m leaving here today
Track Name: Medicine
Baby take your medicine, don’t you go again. Saw you take to the air, fell like leaves down the stairs and since then we've both been slipping away. Clinging hard to these shapes from which our bodies are made but you're looking at me like a ghost.

Above the noise in the street, you wake in soaking sheets again. I try cool your brow as you lie back down looking like you are dead, apart from beads of sweat on your pretty forehead. I get such a deep sense of dread.

You’re so far away, I can't reach, I can’t take it.
You’re so far away. I can't reach.

In the canticles of love there must be reference to, somewhere, this heavy-handed blackness that has driven a wedge so firmly between me and you --- a constant companion always bearing his teeth, whispering false wisdom and grief

Oh, where your mind's been I can hardly begin to believe --- you tried to soar in the air like a bird on a prayer, and for a moment, you were free of your cares only you tumbled down so hard to the ground --- and your sadness is destroying me!

Because you’re so far away, I can't reach, I can’t take it.
You’re so far away. I can't reach.

But I’ll stay by your side and that’s how it must be anyway. So come on do your worst, I can share in the hurt and I’ll try keep firm my beliefs despite your two eyes like burning coals in the night --- oh, please take your medicine for me!

Maybe lessen the sound of the world falling down all around --- try pull the thorn from your side, lift the veil from your eyes. Baby, I want all of you! Not just the tears in my eyes long after you've died --- me and you, we belong in this life

But you’re so far away, I can't reach, I can’t take it.
You’re so far away, I can't reach.
You’re so far away, I can't reach, I can’t take it.
You’re so far away. I can't reach you….
Track Name: Robert Is Here To Spoil Your Party
Oh no! Robert is here!
Robert has come to ruin your party
Oh no, Robert is here
Robert has come and he’s drinking too much and it’s all going down much too fast
Of all my friends, I’d ask him last

Oh no! Robert is here!
Robert has come to spoil your birthday
Oh no, Robert is here
Why did you bring him here!?
Track Name: Year Of The Shark
-PART ONE-
Staring at the green of the cold North Sea with the wind beating down on the old country and I'm tired. I am tired.

And no sound comes out when I want to shout; there is a hole in my head full of bullets and lead and I'm tired. I am tired.

I see you hiding in the sea
Shimmering flecks on aquamarine
The age of Aquarius, the year of the shark
Swimming, silver, in the water --- a light bulb in the dark

And there's no way I am getting my hair wet
and there's no way I am going out there
and there's no way I am coming out to join you when I’m already drowning right here and I'm tired. I am tired.

I see you hiding in the sea
Shimmering flecks on aquamarine
The age of Aquarius, the year of the shark
Swimming, silver, in the water --- a light bulb in the dark

No, no, no, no, no. I'm drowning.
No, no, no, no, no. I'm tired.

I see you hiding in the sea
Shimmering flecks on aquamarine
The age of Aquarius, the year of the shark
Swimming, silver, in the water --- a light bulb in the dark

-PART TWO-
I shot a soldier in the hand and he'll never shoot again and the tide washes everything away
Down the barrel of gun at another human and the tide washes everything away
The enemy is within make sure that you don’t work for him --- hold that thought in your memory
There are spies everywhere, just be sure there are none here --- hold that thought in your memory
Oh, sail away from these rocks, there's many sailors lost --- hold that thought in your memory
And there's no way I'm getting my hair wet
and there's no way I'm coming out there
and there's no way I'm coming out to join you
when I'm already drowning right here and I am tired.
Track Name: Violence
Well, I guess that they finally caught me
laying low abroad --- it’s time to face the music because someone’s been keeping score

I never really got lazy, I guess that I just got bored of living like an outlaw, hiding from The Law

And I’ve been gone so long, my son, I forgot what I was running for
Violence and I --- two silhouettes against the sun, barely one step in front of Karma’s frosty touch

The wagon pulls up to a stop, I keep my eyes fixed on the door --- tense my back in anticipation and stay close to the floor

I’m ready to use my fists, my jaw, my teeth, my claws. Read all about it tomorrow --- it’s theatre --- and I fucking love applause!

Oh, I’ve been gone so long, my son, I forgot what I was running for
Violence and I --- two silhouettes against the sun, barely one step in front of Karma’s frosty touch

I’ve been gone so long, my son, I forgot what I was running for
I’ve been gone so long, my son, I forgot what I was running for
I’ve been gone so long, my son, I forgot what I was running for
I’ve been gone so long, my son, I forgot what I was running for
Violence and I --- two silhouettes against the sun, barely one step in front of Karma’s frosty touch
Track Name: I'd Paint Myself Blue (For You)
Walking around with a bag full of frowns
Do you realise
I have love on my mind
Can you see what I’m saying
I have no way of knowing
if the words were compelling
or my thoughts were foretelling
but you, sweet you, have less than a clue
You, sweet you, have less than a clue
I’d paint myself blue for you

You know I’m not a ghost I told you so
In the flesh, I passed your test
With flying colours passed, how I digressed
The end was heaven sent

You, sweet you, have less than a clue
You, sweet you, have less than a clue
I’d paint myself blue for you
I’d paint myself blue for you
Sweet you, I’d paint myself blue for you
I’d paint myself blue for you
I’d paint myself blue for you
For you
Track Name: Seaside Town, Out Of Season
So you're stuck here, polishing trinkets that you know will never sell
While the sun goes down behind the shutters, this town is cold and, out of season, it's hell

And all the lovers have left town
The streets are empty now
And you're stuck here.

Once again, as the waves go out, you wonder if they'll return
Just another doubt --- but of course they do, they always do and that's the only lesson you've learned

And all the lovers have left town
It's nearly Christmas now
And you're stuck here

All in all, a pretty bad year
But you're here because they pay you, Dear,
and I know your heart is dulling ---
they say worse things happen at sea
so strike up your courage
and leave

Because all the lovers have left town
It's unrecognisable now
And you're stuck here
Track Name: Dog Song
Sitting alone like a dog with no bone it's true
A body that’s tired and a mind that's too mired. I’m screwed. It's all gone wrong. The curse goes on. Where are you? You are where?
Where are you? You are where? Are where?
Track Name: Writer's Block
Are you struggling now to write anything down that’s of note? Keep on scribbling it out, keep on pressing delete and it goes
Still, you try for a song for some reason that you only knows but you forgot what it was so now you have very little control

And all you wanted was a voice to be heard but soon came to realise that that’s not how the world works

Keep on listening out for a tune to channel through you but all your favourites are tired, and besides, they just wouldn’t do
You want to smash your guitar, want to cry like a child in your room but no, that’s not going to work and that’s the God-honest truth

And all you wanted was a voice to be heard but soon came to realise that that’s not how the world works

And you can question yourself again: is anything worthwhile that you’ve ever said?
And why do you bury the truth of the message that you’re always trying to say?
Why can you never be honest with yourself that way?
Try. Try to play it straight….

All you wanted was a voice to be heard but soon came to realise that that’s not how the world works

It’s like your therapist said, you’ll be winding up dead on your back so look elsewhere instead, don’t continue to tread on this path
And you’re looking around while you’re laid on the couch of her bed --- yeah, she’s ever so good but you’re like, “get out of my head”

Because all you wanted was a voice to be heard but soon came to realise that that’s not how the world works
Track Name: My Green Eyes
My green eyes are running red
This far but no further
It’s just a dream ---
Seep into my real world
Well, I’m a boy and you are a girl

Meet me at the harbour
Me and you, oh the consequence
It’s just a dream ---
I wanted to hold you near
Best stay away, best steer clear

Are we really two lovers floating on the open ocean who could not – could never have each other? Oh! I won’t ask.

But I’ll remember you well
In the Bath Spa Hotel
And these were just dreams

Are we really two lovers floating on the open ocean who could not – could never have each other? No! We are two people who are never getting out of here and we could not – we should never have each other, so don’t you ask
Track Name: The Front Pages
England loves a mystery, England loves a scandal. England holds its breath, England scared to death. Choke on news on the front page

The old black crow is selling off the medicine, acid-stripping assets that we can’t buy back again, twisting the truth on the front page

I know you’re frightened but it’s just a game
Meet the shareholders face-to-face
Come stake your claim

You can have your fun, yes, you can have your trial but real crimes are hiding in plain sight between the lines on the front page

View the inhumanity, the blatant cruelty, the sad results of your scorched Earth policies screaming out from the front page

I know you’re frightened but it’s just a game
Meet the shareholders face-to-face
Come refute these claims

England loves a mystery, England loves a scandal. England holds its breath, England scared to death. Choke on news on the front page
Track Name: I Don't Know Why
I don't know why you've gone away
I don't know why you've left me this way
I don't know what to do
I don't know what to say
I've got nowhere to go
I've got nothing to show
I don't know why you've gone away
I don't know why you've left me this way
I don't know why
Track Name: William
“William, will you let me ride to war with you? I’ve seen your flags, I’ve seen your infantry blue, so say you’ll let me ride to war you. Summer’s over and the harvest’s through and I would surely make good company too.”

“Oh, let your heart be stilled.
Christ alive”, I cried
And died once more inside
You close the door
and let Death pass you by
Distant on the breeze
Distant on the breeze
It comes, it comes ---
“Hallelujah! Hallelujah!” ---
Voices of the people gathered there
Gathered to wave away the dead

“Brother, I won’t have you ride to war with me. Work your land while you are still free.
Keep the home fires bright for me. Your death is not something that I want to see on the blood-soaked mud of the low valley.”

“Oh, let your heart be stilled.
Christ alive”, I cried
And died once more inside
You close the door…
Distant on the breeze
Distant on the breeze
It comes it comes ---
“Hallelujah! Hallelujah!” ---
Voices of the people gathered there
Gathered to wave away the dead
Gathered to wave away the dead
Gathered to wave away the dead
Track Name: You Are The One That I've Been Waiting For
Yes it is evening, it's always the evening. Out in the garden, I am freezing. Candle still burning, your coat on my arm, my breath in the air and the air is calm. The tiles in the bathroom, the paint on the door, the things that need mending, your clothes on the floor. You won't pick them up at all. You are the one that I've been waiting for

You are the one that I've been waiting for
You are the one that I've been waiting for

I saw a serpent biting its tail and a host of angels drowning in flame. I've seen beauty lost, un-replaced --- all I know is that I have to wait. The sky is on fire if you look to the West where the fields burn black and the city is lost. There is nowhere safe for me anymore. You are the one that I've been waiting for

You are the one that I've been waiting for
You are the one that I've been waiting for

Although I didn’t know
I didn’t know
How could I not know!?

My friends are all scattered throughout time and space but we come together when the effort is made. I've been to more weddings than funerals to date, but I'm aware that one day that will change. Waited one Christmas for the birth of a boy in a hospital ward filled with women and noise. I'll write you your own song, until then be sure, you are the one that I've been waiting for

You are the one that I've been waiting for
You are the one that I've been waiting for
You are the one that I've been waiting for
Track Name: The Cruel Mother
She has leaned her back up against the thorn
(The sun shines down on Carlisle Wall)
She has had a bonny babe born
(And the lion shall be Lord of all)

She has laid him beneath some marble stone
(The sun shines down on Carlisle Wall)
And sorrow has shook her to the bone
(And the lion shall be Lord of all)

“Oh bonny babe, if you were mine
(The sun shines down on Carlisle Wall)
I'd dress you up in silk so fine”
(And the lion shall be Lord of all)

“Oh mother mine, when I was thine
(The sun shines down on Carlisle Wall)
I never saw anything quite so fine”
(And the lion shall be Lord of all)

“Oh bonny babe, pray tell to me
(The sun shines down on Carlisle Wall)
The sort of death I shall have to die”
(And the lion shall be Lord of all)

“Seven years of tongue to the warning bell
(The sun shines down on Carlisle Wall)
Seven years in the flames of hell!
(And the lion shall be Lord of all)

Oh mother mine, God shan’t save thee ---
(The sun shines down on Carlisle Wall)
Seven years for the murder of me!”
(And the lion shall be Lord of all)

“Oh child, please, will you not forgive me
(The sun shines down on Carlisle Wall)
For I was but a maid in desperate need?”
(And the lion shall be Lord of all)
