O my love is light as a dove Her skin is fair and dark is her hair And her eyes dart 'round and fall on the ground And her lips move along to an old country song O down south you'll find, amongst the tall pines An old liquor store where we danced on the floor O the light on the wall, it brightens the hall But the room in the back is quiet and black What keeps me alive is the green in your eyes And the sweet distant drone of your voice on the phone Could I hear, in death, your voice and your breath? Could I hear them sounds in life underground? Lightly she walks among the white stalks And, craning her neck, she steps from the deck Could I bow in the sand to your lilly white hand? May my head gently rest on your lilly white breast? O my love is light as a dove Her skin is fair and dark is her hair And her eyes dart 'round and fall on the ground And her lips move along to an old country song

FRIENDS (OR I CAME HERE TO DRINK BOOZE AND DESTROY TOWN) I tried to party all night but I crashed out 'round twelve-thirty Tried to party all night but I really wasn't thirsty I wasn't going to go, I tried to stay at home but they made me Yeah, there's something going on but I'm a Stay-In Stacey And if I don't get back alive Or if I don't make thirty-five It’s been a wonderful time, thanks for coming to see me Had a wonderful time, but I read the signs, I'm leaving I wasn't going to go, ‘cos I’ve forgotten how to partáy Tried to rock out tonight but I threw up outside Carpe And if I don't get back alive Or if I don't make thirty-five Keep holding on Keep holding on Keep holding ever-shifting shapes and bodies out in space anon Friends holding on And if I don't get back alive Or if I don't make thirty-five Keep holding on Keep holding on Keep holding ever-shifting shapes and bodies out in space anon Friends holding on

Nothing That's all I hear Down by the scenery Of sea And nothing below The breeze in the trees The sand between my toes And all is well So far as I can tell Feel free to tell me otherwise But nothing That you could say Could ruin this heatwave And if I had my guitar I'd play something fast and mean It's the Estrella raging in my bloodstream And the red wine stains On my white Felice shirt But It's all worked Out well for me Mediterranean blue for the day Take a little sunshine with your afternoon rain Won't be long until I'm back again Mediterranean blue for the day Take a little sunshine with your afternoon rain Won't be long until I'm back again

Yes it is evening, it's always the evening Out in the garden, I am freezing Candle still burning, your coat on my arm My breath in the air and the air is calm The tiles in the bathroom, the paint on the door The things that need mending, your clothes on the floor You won't pick them up at all You are the one that I've been waiting for You are the one that I've been waiting for You are the one that I've been waiting for I saw a serpent biting its tail And a host of angels drowning in flame I've seen beauty lost, un-replaced All I know is that I have to wait Still, the sky is on fire If you look to the west Where the fields burn black and the city is lost There is nowhere safe for me anymore You are the one that I've been waiting for You are the one that I've been waiting for You are the one that I've been waiting for Although I didn’t know Although I didn’t know How could I not know!? I've been to more weddings than funerals up to date But I'm aware that one day that will change Waited one Christmas for the birth of a boy In a hospital ward filled with women and noise My friends are scattered throughout time and space But we come together when the effort is made I'll write you your own song, until then be sure You are the one that I've been waiting for You are the one that I've been waiting for You are the one that I've been waiting for You are the one that I've been waiting for

She’s still pretty but don’t mention last year’s breakdown She’s going to find another in town And creep under the skin like a sad, sad ivy Like a poison charm or a boat lost at sea She’s a boat lost at sea Like a sad, sad, sad ivy Like me On with a life. Her eyes slowed to adjust She dreams of control, power and trust And creep under the skin like a sad, sad ivy Like a poison charm or a boat lost at sea She’s a boat lost at sea Like a sad, sad, sad ivy Like me Blurred numbers dance under tired skies Blurred numbers dance under tired eyes You make the sweetest sound that I’ve ever heard Sweeter than those of Mary the First The sweetest sounds I’ve heard on this earth You make the sweetest sound that I’ve ever heard Sweeter than those of Mary the First The sweetest sounds I’ve heard on this earth

Meadow Song 02:43
In the windy meadow beneath the shade of an old oak tree Sip a little whisky, come keep me company We’re not lost --- I know exactly where we need to be Oh, my days….. Dragonflies, bright and blue land on grass of deep green There is a humming on the breeze. Sounds like All I’ve ever said or done, and all I’ve ever seen Coming back to me….. Come and say hello in the meadow You know that you want to I'm alone, on my own, in the meadow I'll wait one more day for you This old guitar has a lot of scars but a solid wooden heart In this world of sin, I’m so afraid to live. It’s been awkward from the start but on and on it spins Join me as I sing…. Come and say hello in the meadow You know that you want to I'm alone, on my own, in the meadow I'll wait one more day for you I'll wait one more day for you I'll wait one more day for you

Joanne 04:08
Now Joanne, she's a strange one Her big ideas, they come and they go She's a feather on a windsome morn And she's an angel in the snow She doesn't know where she's going And she doesn't know how to slow She needs something, something that's different In the life she's come to know When Joanne rings in the changes You know you're not going to come through You've seen Joanne's life rearranging And she's written her own rules Now Joanne's nowhere to be seen I've not heard her voice on the telephone She's a ghost in my lifeline Since she turned and walked that road When Joanne rings in the changes You know you're not going to come through You've seen Joanne's life rearranging And she's broken her own rules And she's still, still feeling used And she's still, still running confused And she's still, yes she’s still in a state I can't help but feel like she likes it that way Oh Joanne, are you unhappy? Or Joanne, are you just bored? When Joanne rings in the changes You know you're not going to come through You've seen Joanne's life rearranging And there are, there are no rules

Ava Adore 03:53
It's you that I adore You will always be my whore You'll be a mother to my child And a child to my heart We must never be apart We must never be apart Lovely girl you're the beauty in my world Without you there aren't reasons left to find And I'll pull your crooked teeth You'll be perfect just like me You'll be a lover in my bed And a gun to my head We must never be apart We must never be apart Lovely girl you're the murder in my world Dressing coffins for the souls I've left to die Drinking mercury. To the mystery Of all that you should ever leave behind In time In you I see dirty In you I count the stars In you I feel so pretty In you I taste God In you I feel so hungry In you I crash cars We must never be apart Drinking mercury. To the mystery Of all that you should ever seek to find Lovely girl you're the murder in my world Dressing coffins for the souls I've left behind In time We must never be apart Drinking mercury. To the mystery Of all that you should ever seek to find Lovely girl you're the murder in my world Dressing coffins for the souls I've left behind In time We must never be apart And you'll always be my whore 'Cause you're the one that I adore And I'll pull your crooked teeth You'll be perfect just like me In you I feel so dirty In you I crash cars In you I feel so pretty In you I taste God... We must never be apart

Tossing and turning on a sea of teeth The Girl In The Swing always helps me to sleep Not for the first time in my whole life But I fucked up pretty bad this time….. Here at the top of my skull, I wonder, how could it be? Hearts are little liars and are not to be believed And you say I am insolent And I am incomplete I’m a forest fire on a city street But I don’t want to be I’ve got a life to lead You say I’m a juvenile I’m an awful friend I’m a runaway train at the railroad’s end Something I don’t want to see But that’s not really me I was sailing away upon a lake of sweat Every harbor filled with poison regret And I wasn’t sure if I’d survive…. So I brought a pistol to your knife fight Here at the top of my skull, I wonder, how could it be? Hearts are little liars and are not to be believed And you say I am insolent And I am incomplete I’m a forest fire on a city street But I don’t want to be I’ve got a life to lead You say I’m a juvenile I’m an awful friend I’m a runaway train at the railroad’s end Something I don’t want to see But that’s not really me Some ride for a woman who has no name, some ride for a king But me I’d ride and ride for The Girl In The Swing Race like a phantom through fields of snow You ask me if I know what love is? Sure I know But hearts are little liars and must be treated so Ba Ba Ba-Ba Ba-Ba Ba Ba Hearts are little liars and I dont want to know Ba Ba Ba-Ba Ba-Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba-Ba Ba-Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba-Ba Ba-Ba Ba Ba

This can happen any day So be careful what you say Be clean and tidy oil the lock Trim the garden, wind the clock And now, with swift emergence, comes the woman and the surgeons Turn off your eyes, forget your mind Don’t forget what’s left inside Blue eyed silhouetted frame She came to talk with me again And now, with swift emergence, comes the woman and the surgeons

about

Silverlode is an indie rock band from Leeds, UK and we proudly present 'The Summer Of Fourteen'.... our live ‘acoustic’ album. Here is some background information about where it came from:-

Silverlode regularly features Rob (that's me), Scott, Gaz, Dave, Hannah and Luke. In the last eighteen months Gaz, Dave and myself have all become fathers and so, in a general sense, the management of work, home, leisure and band life has become a little trickier. Gone are the days when we would play five gigs a week up and down the land. But we don't quit; we use the time we do have to work differently and create something new. And so, during 2014, we played a lot of gigs as a an 'upbeat folksome trio' with an instrument-swapping line up of Rob, Scott and Hannah. 'Summer of Fourteen' is a collection of ten songs recorded live to reflect performances with eight originals and two covers (The Felice Brothers and The Smashing Pumpkins).

It turned out that the majority of gigs in 2014 were played this way, developing a new and flexible line-up to enable us to tread the line between being acoustic folk/pop act and an indie rock band. At these gigs the audience would regularly see Scott sitting at the front of the stage to play kick drum and foot tambo whilst playing acoustic bass guitar or the reed organ; for some songs he would play full drums. Hannah would switch between synth and ukulele, and occasioanlly swap to the bass behind her paisley keyboard stand. All the meanwhile I would stand behind at the back and bash the Dick Dale out of my acoustic guitar and all three of us would sing our hearts out.

We wanted to document this new and potentially temporary live line up on record. The idea was to work quickly. Write the songs, play the songs, record the songs, release the songs – before the summer was over. Our previous album, Eye In The Void, took around two years to make from conception to final release, largely due to the fact that it was heavier guitar and effects-laden record of greater complexity. We wanted this one to be swift and fairly spontaneous.

So the Summer of Fourteen was recorded live, as per gig performances, across several sessions at my Grain Division Studio, Leeds and then mixed and mastered by Mike Cockerham at Syke Lane Studios (Mike did a great job of mixing Eye In The Void). Each songs is the first or second take, with the exception of Meadow Song which, for some reason, too rather a few more to nail. Imperfections abound, but that was always going to be the deal. Essentially, this is the sound of us trying something different to our usual studio approach and trying to be honest about where we are at. Or rather where we were at in the summer of fourteen…..
